Hydrological Evolution of a Lake Recharged by Groundwater in the Badain Jaran Desert Over the Past 140 years

چکیده

Understanding the evolution of lakes in arid areas is very important for water resource management. Previous studies have mainly focused on with runoff recharge, while groundwater recharge hyper-arid still less known. In this study, an 86 cm-long sediment core was extracted from Sayinwusu Lake, one groundwater-recharge southeastern Badain Jaran Desert, Northwest China. 210 Pb and 137 Cs dating, total organic carbon (TOC) nitrogen (TN) contents, mineral content analysis were used to reconstruct lake over past 140 years. The Lake since 1880 can be divided into two periods. first period 1950, TOC TN contents low, minerals consisted all detrital minerals, which indicate that lake’s primary productivity salinity low. During second 1950 2018, TOC, TN, carbonate increased rapidly at beginning 1950s, indicating increased. Comprehensive regional climate data suggests increase evaporation caused by rising temperature factor affecting desert. Although precipitation has region China recent decades increasing temperature, enhancement effect much greater. As a record deserts, our study provides new insight projecting future changes areas.

Local Circulation Maintains the Coexistence of Lake-dune Pattern in the Badain Jaran Desert

Previous studies proposed various hypotheses to the formation of the mega-dunes and water recharge of the lakes in the Badain Jaran Desert but left the coexistence of lake-dune pattern unsolved. This research found that the local circulation, generated from the differences of thermodynamic properties and the unique landscape settings between lakes and mega-dunes, can be applied to interpret the...

Satellite-based estimates of groundwater depletion in the Badain Jaran Desert, China

Despite prevailing dry conditions, groundwater-fed lakes are found among the earth's tallest sand dunes in the Badain Jaran Desert, China. Indirect evidence suggests that some lakes are shrinking. However, relatively few studies have been carried out to assess the regional groundwater conditions and the fate of the lakes due to the remoteness and severity of the desert environment. Here we use ...

Water Loss Due to Increasing Planted Vegetation over the Badain Jaran Desert, China

Water resources play a vital role in ecosystem stability, human survival, and social development in drylands. Human activities, such as afforestation and irrigation, have had a large impact on the water cycle and vegetation in drylands over recent years. The Badain Jaran Desert (BJD) is one of the driest regions in China with increasing human activities, yet the connection between human managem...
